Girls’ Night Out: Beading Class Edition!

Yesterday I made the journey up to the town where my parents live to spend the day with my Momma.

I always love going back to the house where I grew up. I get to do laundry for free, I get fed awesome food, and everything is familiar. Also, I get to see some of my favorite people… human and non-human!

My doggie Ringo (a.k.a. Wink-O, a.k.a. Captain Destructo, a.k.a. my faithful steed)

I had a special reason for this trip up north, though. My mom and I had a date to take a beading class together at one of my favorite shops – The Potomac Bead Company. This place is like a beader’s dream world. If they would let me set up a tent in the corner and live there for a week, I’d do it in a heartbeat. (Do you hear me Potomac Beads?? I’m just waiting for your OK!)

Ahh, the colors!

OK, getting back on track…

My mom gifted me with a Living Social coupon to a class of my choice at this wondrous place for us to do together, so I chose one where I could learn how to make a different type of jewelry that I’ve been wanting to offer in my shop  for quite some time: Wire rings!

We learned how to make a few different styles of rings at this workshop (although only one is pictured in the above photos). It was so much fun learning a new skill and spending some much needed quality time with my Momma. I hope we can do another class together sometime soon!

Me & my Momma, all smiles after a fun night of beading together (Yes, I know I look just like her!)

I’m still refining my technique, so I’m not ready to put any rings up in the shop just yet. I’m really excited to keep working at it and have some new designs to offer you all before too long. 🙂

Is there a new skill that you’ve learned recently that you’re proud of? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

Xo, Ali

My Best Friend’s Wedding

Were you hoping this post would be about an awesome Julia Roberts movie full of 90’s goodness and big hair? Sorry to let you down, friends. Hopefully lots of pretty pictures will make up for it! 🙂

This past weekend, my bestie tied the knot with her love of 5 years. I couldn’t be happier for them!

Me with my beautiful bestie, Kelly, on her wedding day

I got to play a big role in the making of this wedding, which was pretty awesome when all is said and done. In addition to being a bridesmaid and making the bridesmaids’ jewelry (obvi), I headed up a team of hardworking friends of the happy couple to create 80 mason jar centerpieces for the outdoor pavilion reception + some little extra bottles for cocktail hour.

To everyone who helped pull off this project: THANK YOU. You are rockstars.

A lot DIY went into making this reception the gorgeous party that it was. Kelly and Chris seriously have the best friends. How beautiful is this end result!?

In addition to our DIY-ed centerpieces, Kelly hired a local florist for the bouquets and boutonnieres. You know me – I couldn’t help but snap a few pictures (and by “snap” I mean tap the little camera button on my iPhone. I’m pretty high tech, folks.) Take a look at this loveliness.

Dahlias, David Austin roses, Queen Ann’s Lace, Ranunculus… and some stunning anemones in Kelly’s bouquet. I was drooling.

Another friend of the couple was commissioned with making the wedding cake, which was so delicious that I shamelessly ate three whole slices really enjoyed it and exercised self-control. (Have we talked about my sugar addiction yet? No? Maybe I’ll get to that someday…)

Not only was the cake to-die-for-delicious; it was gorgeous and perfectly styled for their rustic outdoor celebration.

I seriously want to eat this all over again. Right now.

The best part of the day for me was getting to spend an evening dancing under the stars with my sweetie and some of my best friends in the whole world.

Me with my super-studly hubster, enjoying the evening

Since being married myself, weddings have evoked some very tender and strong emotions for me. (I was teetering on the edge of ugly-crying during the whole ceremony!) There’s something very special about marriage, and it’s a special kind of joy to watch my friends begin their own journeys into matrimony.

Congratulations, Kelly and Chris. May the Lord bless you with many beautiful years together. I love you both!

Pretty Little Things: Stationery on Display

Last night I went out with a bunch of girlfriends to an event in a historic city nearby. Every third Thursday, Ellicott City hosts Girls’ Night Out, an event with free wine, discounted shopping, and other goodies. The event draws in flocks of women from the area, and it seems like our group gets bigger every time.

While there were so many beautiful things that caught my eye while browsing and sipping through the town, the stationery at Sweet Elizabeth Jane was my favorite find.

It’s not hard to tell why I love these little cards so much. Bright colors, clever (sometimes punny) words, vintage styling – it’s all right up my alley. I think I like the pink sheep card best because it strikes a chord with my animal-loving, quirky/bad-joke-telling, pretty-things-obsessed personality. Which one is your favorite?

A Little Bit About Me… {Me, Myself and I Link-Up Party}

This is my first link-up party! I saw my good friend & fellow blogger Betsy join in this morning, and it looked so fun that I had to hop in, too! I’m super excited to link up to other blogs and share a bit more of myself with you lovely readers of mine. Here goes!

What is your biggest phobia?

True confessions time: I’m afraid of the dark. When I was little, I would imagine silly things that scare kids (vampires behind closed doors, cats popping out at me from around corners, ghouls grabbing at my ankles as I sprinted up the basement stairs…). Nowadays, it’s what I know could actually be there. Rapists. Burglars. People who generally wish to do me harm. Especially when I’m home alone in the apartment! ::Shudder::

If you could relive any day of your life, what would it be and why?

These questions are always so hard to answer. How could I possibly single in on one day and call it my best? I’m going to cheat on this question and just pick a phase of my life to relive.

When I was a junior in college, I spent a semester living in Germany. Seven years prior, I had promised myself that I would live in Germany someday, and I wouldn’t stop working toward that goal until I achieved it. I worked tirelessly preparing for it – working on my language skills in class and on my own time, studying and relishing the culture, exploring German music & media. The six months I spent in Germany were glorious. It was a time when I learned independence and gained my freedom in so many ways. I grew up and discovered many strengths in myself that I never knew I had. I would go back to that time of my life in a heartbeat.

Me with a few friends during a visit to the German city of Heidelberg in 2008. I was on cloud 9.

If you could choose to stay a certain age forever, what age would it be?

23 was a great year for me. I moved out of my parents’ house, landed my first real career job at a place that I was dying to work, fell deeply in love with the man who would become my husband, and generally experienced a lot of personal growth. Then again… I got engaged and married at 24, and am really loving 25. I think that every age has its benefits, so far!

Which celebrity do you get mistaken for?

When I had blonde hair many years ago, I was told that I looked like Carrie Underwood. My sister-in-law thinks that I look like a country singer named Mallary Hope, and my father told me that I look like Zooey Deschanel (my girl crush, so I’ll take it!) What do you think?

What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?

  • My favorite song to sing in the car as a kid — You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette (I had no idea what it was about, but man did it sound good!)
  • Every day after school this was my groove — The introductory song to the PBS show Wishbone
  • First concert I attended — O.C. Supertones with Relient K
  • Favorite concert I attended — Ben Folds or Pete Yorn.
  •  Dustin’s and my special song –Ice Age by Pete Yorn – Dustin claimed it as “our song” right after our first kiss, and we danced our first wedding dance to it. Always a classic for me!
  • Every year on my birthday — Birthday by the Beatles – My dad is a hardcore Beatles fan and he passed his love on to me. Every year on our birthdays, we call each other up and play this song for each other. It never gets old!
