Statement Earrings for Sensitive Ears

Sensitive ears don’t have to limit your bridal jewelry options. Here are my top 3 tips for choosing statement earrings for sensitive ears!

If you’re planning your wedding and have been looking for the perfect pair of statement earrings to match the dress of your dreams but have the “blessing” of sensitive skin (or, as I like to call it, “biological good taste“), chances are you’ve been frustrated by the selection of cheaply plated earrings at the bridal salons.

But having sensitive skin doesn’t have to limit your options!  Your ears can sparkle as brightly as you want with a simple quality upgrade.

1. Choose earrings with sterling silver or real gold posts if you’re sensitive to metal quality and weight.
  • A sturdy post with a secure backing will make sure your earrings stay put with minimal “swing” during the day.
  • I always recommend a higher-quality precious metal for any pair of statement earrings for sensitive ears. Even if the earrings are not heavy, materials like sterling silver and real gold are gentler on the skin than base metals. Most of the earrings in my shop already feature sterling silver or gold filled components, but you can always ask for an upgrade too!
  • If your earrings are heavy, high quality metals will help your sensitive skin be a little more forgiving of the weight and motion that might occur.

2. For dangle earrings, choose lever-backs over open hooks.
  • Lever-back earrings, or hook earrings that close completely in the back, are a style that I always recommend for brides. This is because a closed earring is much less likely to fall out than one that is open! In my experience, they are also less likely to slide around inside your pierced earring hole, which makes for an extra level of comfort when wearing earrings all day.
  • Once again, quality metals are key! Look for lever-backs that are sterling silver or at least gold-filled in quality. For a refresher course on metal quality & terminology, check out this previous blog post.

3. Choose earrings that are as lightweight as possible.
  • It is possible to wear a pair of large-sized statement earrings for sensitive ears without lots of weight. (Just think about the feather earrings that were popular a few years ago!)
  • Wire-wrapped styles are often lighter weight than solid metal frames with pronged stone settings.
  • Alternative materials like lace, feathers, and even colorful acrylic are all creative options for adding a unique “pop” to your statement earrings without weighing down your earlobes.

If all else fails, you can always go custom!

If you’d simply like to save yourself the headache of testing every piece of jewelry against this list of criteria, you can always commission your own bespoke pair of statement earrings for sensitive ears! J’Adorn Bride Jill went this route and was thrilled with the results.

Whatever you choose, be sure to remember that it is possible to have the look and feel you want when it comes to your bridal jewelry!

Custom Rose Gold Jewelry for Bayside Elopement

Jami’s custom rose gold jewelry was featured on Burnett’s Boards, Borrowed & Blue, and The Annapolis Wedding Blog!

Custom Rose Gold Jewelry Baltimore Elopement by J'Adorn Designs Bridal Jewelry

I made this set of custom rose gold jewelry for #jadornbride Jami as part of a styled elopement giveaway last December.

The giveaway was called the Enchanting Elopement giveaway and it was the idea of a Baltimore-area wedding planner, Enchanting Events and Design. We collaborated with 15+ Baltimore-area wedding pros to help one sweet couple tie the knot.

It was the perfect way to end the year on a loving, philanthropic note!

In preparation for the big day, I invited Jami to my jeweler’s studio to try on pieces from my collection of modern bridal accessories and choose her favorite piece. I showed her a handful of earrings and she fell in love with my Double Crystal Teardrop Earrings in Rose Gold immediately. We both agreed that these sparkly rose gold earrings would be the perfect pair to stand out in her wedding pictures!

Jami also wanted a piece of jewelry that she could wear after her wedding in her day-to-day life.

Continuing on the rose gold theme and remembering a comment she made about a love for natural crystals, I made Jami a one-of-a-kind bracelet with a delicate chain and singular gold druzy stone. It was the perfect personal piece of custom jewelry to make her bridal look complete!

Jami and Brad are the quintessential Baltimore couple: their first date was at a Ravens game, both live & work downtown, and Jami works for Under Armour. They’re down to earth and have a deep pride for the city they call home. I was honored to make Jami’s custom rose gold jewelry and play a part in giving them the wedding of their dreams.

Cheers to the happy couple – toasted with a couple of Boh’s, of course!

Custom Sapphire Wedding Jewelry Set

What do you do when you fall in love with a necklace that’s way out of your budget?

This is the question that brought J’Adorn bride Michelle to my door!

custom sapphire wedding jewelry inspiration, custom bridal necklace by J'Adorn Designs

Like many newly engaged women do, Michelle was flipping through a bridal magazine for inspiration when a gorgeous sapphire necklace caught her eye (pictured above, left). She was a woman obsessed; she just had to have it!

But she was crestfallen when she learned that her dream necklace was both unavailable for purchase and valued at over $75,000.

Thankfully, she mentioned her jewelry dilemma to her hairstylist, Erica Cote of Silver Immersion. Erica is also one of my closest friends in the wedding industry. She referred Michelle to J’Adorn Designs, suggesting my custom jewelry services to help recreate the wedding day look of her dreams.

I met with Michelle to discuss the important design elements from the original necklace that she wanted to include:
  • Precious metals and stones (white gold, sapphires, and diamonds)
  • A center stone large enough to really catch the eye
  •  A vintage-inspired halo setting

These elements served as the starting point for my custom design process. We also decided to add a pair of matching earrings to the necklace design, so Michelle would have a coordinated set to cherish & wear for years to come.

I chose lab-created sapphires for Michelle’s necklace and earrings set because they would allow me to create a perfectly matched set. Natural sapphires develop over long periods of time and typically are mined in small sizes. But lab-grown sapphires are grown in a “boule,” or large mass of stone, which is then cut into smaller counterparts.

The sapphires in Michelle’s jewelry set came from the same boule, so they are identical in color, quality, and chemical makeup.

This ensured the perfect fit, which I adjusted around the stones by hand.

The final result was a gorgeous set of custom sapphire wedding jewelry even more radiant that I imagined. I can’t wait to see pictures of Michelle wearing her custom jewelry on her wedding day.

But the best part for me as a designer is knowing that I gave my client exactly what she wanted – a stunning set of jewelry that is 100% uniquely hers.

How to Order Custom Jewelry

(( It’s easier than you think! ))

How to order custom jewelry + Easy custom bridal accessories for your wedding by J'Adorn Designs custom jeweler and modern jewelryPhoto by Madison Short

It’s no secret around here that I love to make custom jewelry and accessories. I view it as the ultimate win-win situation for the client (you!) and the designer (me!). The person ordering the custom jewelry gets to have a bespoke piece of handcrafted art to wear that is 100% suited to their desires. Meanwhile, I have the satisfaction of knowing that the jewelry piece(s) I made will be immediately cherished. There’s no better feeling for a creator!

If you’ve ever wondered about how to order custom jewelry and bridal hair accessories from J’Adorn Designs, this post is for you. I’m going to walk through each step of the custom jewelry design process, from inquiry to gift-wrapped delivery!

Step 1: The Inquiry

The first step in the custom jewelry process is as simple as a quick “hello.” Typically you would send me an email via the website contact form to express your interest. Here are a few inquiry examples:

  • “I am getting married next July and want to give my bridesmaids a meaningful gift to thank them for all of their wedding planning help. Can you make custom jewelry for each of my attendants according to their style?” (Answer: YES!)
  • “My wife and I are celebrating our 25th anniversary this fall and I want to give her a special piece of jewelry that she can wear every day.  I’m not sure what I want to give her exactly, but she loves the color blue and turtles.  Can you help?” (Answer: YES!)
  • “I’ve been searching for the perfect hairpiece to wear with my wedding hairstyle. I haven’t found anything I like in the stores. Can you help me design a hair vine that will work?” (Answer: YES!)

We’ll exchange a few messages to establish a general concept and make sure we want to work together.

Step 2: The Consultation

Next we start talking about specifics! I’ll schedule a meeting with you in person or via video chat, depending on your location & availability. You should bring any photos, color swatches, and ideas along if you have a specific or loosely conceived idea of what you want. If you’re not sure, we’ll have a conversation to figure it out together. I may draw some rough sketches during our meeting and will take copious notes.

Step 3: Sketches & Design Proposal

At this point you’ll pay an initial retainer of $100 to reserve time in my design schedule and to pay for the design options that I’ll create for you. After the design fee retainer is paid and we’ve had our consultation, I will send you three sketches to choose from for your custom jewelry design. These sketches come with two rounds of revisions so we’ll be sure to land on your perfect choice. You’ll receive a final sketch of the piece(s) I’m going to make and a formal proposal with a contract and invoice for your project.  Payment in full is due at this time.

Step 4: Sit Back & Relax While I Work

At this point, we’ve finalized the design and you’ve paid for your custom jewelry to be made. I’ll get right to work creating the accessories you’ve commissioned. All you have to do now is wait!

Step 5: Delivery

This is the most exciting part of the custom jewelry design process! Your jewelry will be delivered personally or by post, depending on your location and our agreement. The custom accessories you ordered will be freshly wrapped in a gift box or pouch, then finished with a satin ribbon in the color of your choosing.

Step 6: Rock it

Whether you ordered custom jewelry for yourself or accessories for a loved one, all that’s left to do now is enjoy it!

Lauren’s Push Present and A Gift for Lolli

J'Adorn Designs custom jewelry push present for new grandmother new mother, baby boy, first grandchild, alexandrite purple gemstone, june birthstone jewelry, delicate handcrafted custom jewelry, nameplate bracelet, engraving, photography by Nichole Rosado Meredith, custom and couture jewelry, baltimore jewelry designer, maryland jewelry designer, maryland custom jeweler
Lauren contacted me shortly after the arrival of Cody, her first child and the first grandchild in her family.  She wanted to create a special piece for her mother to celebrate her new role as a grandmother.  Her vision was a delicate bracelet featuring Cody’s birthstone and an engraved nameplate reading “Lolli,” which is the name her mother prefers over “grandma.”  We designed her bracelet with the ability to add more stones over time as the family continues to grow with more children.

In the process of designing her mom’s bracelet, Lauren ended up falling in love with the Alexandrite stone so much that we decided to add a matching necklace to the order for her to wear.  The result was an elegant set of custom jewelry that I fell in love with, too.

My favorite part of this custom project was learning about the gemstone at its focal point.  I learned that Alexandrite is a rare gem that appears to change colors in different lighting.  To the naked eye, the stones pictured here are a prismatic combination of purple, green, and blue – this is how they looked the entire time I had them in my studio.  However, when photographed or placed under incandescent light, they become the reddish-purple that you’ll see here!  Alexandrite is a great alternative to the traditional pearl birthstone in June if you’re looking for something a little different.

Congratulations to Lauren, Michael, “Lolli,” and the rest of your family on your new addition! Thank you for choosing J’Adorn Designs to create these very special pieces in celebration of Cody’s arrival.
