How to Clean Jewelry at Home

So Fresh and So (sparkling) Clean

Jewelry care isn’t as hard as you might think. You can clean your jewelry at home using simple ingredients you already have. Doing this only takes a little time and can dramatically increase the longevity of your jewelry!

This process works for fine and fashion jewelry, even delicate stones like pearls and opals.

Step #1: Gather Supplies

How to clean jewelry at home: Easy jewelry cleaning instructions using ingredients you already have at home! Jewelry care tips by J'Adorn Designs, custom jewelry and bridal accessories.

You will need:

  • jewelry you want to clean
  • small dish
  • gentle soap (hand soap works fine for clean jewelry)
  • a toothbrush (green tip: you can disinfect and use an old one)
  • soft lint-free cloth (We like the flannel polishing cloths they sell at Michael’s in the jewelry section, but you can also recycle an old t-shirt or pair of flannel pajama pants.)

Step #2: Prepare the Cleaning Solution

SURPRISE!  No harsh chemicals needed!

A tiny drop of gentle soap in your dish with warm water will do the trick.  Just be sure to swish the water around with the toothbrush until the soap dissolves completely.

Step #3: Scrubba – dub – dub

Dip the jewelry in your soapy water dish, then scrub gently with the toothbrush.

PRO TIP: Make sure you get behind any gemstones and into any crevices or engraving!

Examine from all angles, then get back in there if you need to! (it’s sort of the rinse, lather & repeat of the jewelry cleaning world)

Step #4: Let It Dry

How to clean jewelry at home: Easy jewelry cleaning instructions using ingredients you already have at home! Jewelry care tips by J'Adorn Designs, custom jewelry and bridal accessories.

Lay your freshly clean jewelry on your cloth to dry.  Gently pat to remove excess water.  Pick up the piece and be sure to pat dry any water droplets taking refuge in tiny crevasses!

Step #5: Polish and Shine

If you chose a polishing cloth, you can use it to shine the surface of the metal and remove any residual tarnishing.  And don’t forget to clean those earring backs, too!

We hope we’ve inspired you to do a little jewelry cleaning.  Trust us… it’s MUCH more fun than spring cleaning!  And if you’ve been admiring, we featured our Posy & Pearl Earrings in this post.  And our photography was done by the impeccable Britney Clause.

Spend Saturday with Us!

We’re kicking off our Fall/Holiday Market season with a day at Cotton & Co Vintage Boutique in Keymar. Maryland.  Come bring the whole family to this event.  There will be something for everyone!

A few months ago, we announced our Stockist Partnership with Cotton & Co.  The shop is home to 6,000 square feet of vintage and artisan treasures as well as the state’s only Maryland General Store.  The General Store features over 20 Maryland makers who practice primitive and artisan trades.  And Saturday is all about celebrating us Makers!

Here’s what Shop Owner Jess has to say about this event:

Join us as we introduce you to the faces and businesses behind the Maryland General Store. Many of the owners, creatives and representatives behind our local, MD owned and operated small businesses will be joining us. They’ll be bringing new merchandise or introducing new lines of inventory. Bring the kids and paint a pumpkin while you’re here! A fun day out for the whole family. Light refreshments and treats too!

We’ll be popping up with our new table-scape!  Aren’t our displays amazing?  We commissioned a custom set of modular platforms to elevate (get it!?) our show display setup.  We’ve used them a few times already and LOVE them so far.

Gemstone Jewelry You Can Find at the Baltimore Museum of Art

A mini-collection of our handcrafted jewelry just landed at the BMA, including some exclusive pieces you can’t find anywhere else.

J'Adorn Designs handcrafted gemstone jewelry: A mini-collection now available at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Artisan jewelry made with freshwater pearls and gemstones including rose quartz, aquamarine, amazonite, tourmaline, druzy quartz, and watermelon tourmaline.

(If you can tear your eyes away from all the pretties in that photo to read this, WELL DONE!)

A selection of our pieces have been available in the gift shop at the Baltimore Museum of Art for a little over a year now.  You may remember reading about that in this post.  However, with the holidays around the corner and a couple new collections under our belt, the BMA wanted to update their offerings.

Over the past year, we’ve fallen in love with colorful gemstones.

Druzies remain a consistent favorite (though, we’re finding new ways to work with them… more on that later).  But recently, we’re finding ourselves drawn to color, texture and shape.  At the BMA, and in our newest collections, you’ll find lots of high quality gemstones…

  • Watermelon tourmaline
  • Aquamarine
  • Rose quartz
  • Druzy
  • Amazonite
  • Rough tourmaline

The Baltimore Museum of Art fell in love with our Watermelon Tourmaline Branch Earrings and had to have them.

But, they also wanted a bracelet to coordinate.

The Watermelon Tourmaline Bracelet (above) is ONLY available at the BMA.  It’s one of the custom pieces they commissioned from us for their J’Adorn Collection.

So, if you’re local you can snag it there!

As always, our hand wrapped wire jewelry features one continuous piece of lightweight, precious metal wire. This means the piece is delicate, flexible and that you’ll never lose a gemstone or get scratched due to a rogue wire end.

The BMA also requested a custom Sterling Silver and Amazonite set.  They customized this look based on our Crystal Spike Necklace with Pearl Accent and our White Druzy Earrings & Rose Quartz Drops.

These BMA exclusive pieces feature our signature classic style with a twist for more color.  We’re loving the Amazonite Spike and Gray Pearl Accent necklace.  And of course the Amazonite + Druzy Drop Earrings are to die for!

But if you want either of them, you’ll need to pay a visit to the Baltimore Museum of Art.

We know you’re probably still swooning over these photos.

It’s okay.  We are too.

But we’ve got an exciting little teaser for you…

How to Wear Our Rose Gold Bridal Vine

A Very Versatile Vine

Why choose when you don’t have to?  We are obsessed with OPTIONS.
And our Rose Gold Bridal Vine gives you plenty of options!

How to Wear a Hair Vine: Two wedding hairstyles featuring our Rose Gold Bridal Vine as a wedding hair accessory. J'Adorn Designs heirloom bridal hair accessories and jewelry

Today we’re sharing two gorgeous ways to style it in your locks.

(Plus, a third bonus look if you read through to the end!)

We made this delicate show-stopper with freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals and genuine rose gold plated wire. It’s sure to become a treasured heirloom and special occasion go-to.

High quality materials make our hair pieces stand out in a sea of rhinestones and nickel!

Style #1: Cascade on a Braid

We designed this vine with loops on each end.  When wearing the vine in your hair, use the loops to anchor bobby pins through and fasten it securely in your updo.  Place a few more pins along the length of the braid, and you’ll be set to dance the night away!

We love how the crystals and pearls add a touch of sparkle and (even more) interest to the side braid in this style.  It’s perfect for elevating a more relaxed dress style, like the one pictured here!

Style #2: The Halo (or, Party in the Back)

Did we mention we love options?  Because, we really really love options.

Styled as a halo, the vine can be worn with a veil or as a stand-alone piece.  Photographers especially love the versatility of this piece.  Give yourself the gift of variety!

If we haven’t given you enough reasons to get all tangled up in this vine, here’s one of the BEST ones:

Even though it’s ultra delicate and flexible, it’s made with one continuous piece of rose gold plated wire.

That means it won’t come unwrapped.  You’ll never get poked or scratched by a rogue wire end.  And, you’ll never lose a crystal or a pearl!

How would YOU wear this piece?

We’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.  Maybe you’ll think of something we haven’t yet!  Or, take it to your hairdresser and let them play!  You’ll have a look that’s uniquely yours.

Bonus look: The Choker

To wear the vine as a choker, loop the included ribbons through the ends and tie the ribbons together.  That way, you’ll always have a comfortable fit!
