My First Art Show

This past Saturday marked a very exciting and important date in the history of J’Adorn Designs and my career as a jewelry designer: my first art festival! In a completely unexpected twist of fate, I got a last-minute spot at the Gunpowder River Artfest hosted at Boordy Vineyards in Hydes, Maryland.  It was awesome!

How beautiful is this property? I found it completely breathtaking as I rolled onto the vineyard’s property early Saturday morning to set up. The scene was tranquil, with vast expanses of fields buffeted by hills in the distance.

From noon to 7pm, visitors strolled through the festival, sipping on wine and feasting their eyes on the expertly crafted pieces of art that vendors had brought to the event. Here are a few snaps of my setup:

The day was a total scorcher – we were all sweating by 9am – but to be perfectly honest, I didn’t mind the heat at all. I was just so happy to be there, to be among fellow artists and to show my work. I made a lot of friends that day and I loved talking about my work, checking out what others were creating, and feeling the sense of community there.

Above is a picture of me with a woman named Vallie, who happened to be my first customer. The silversmith in the booth beside me insisted on taking this photo of my “first sale” at my first art show, since this would be a moment to remember. I’m so glad she did!

I had such a great time at the event, and I’m sure I’ll remember it for years to come. Every artist I talked to that day told me that they could vividly remember their first art show, even the ones that had been working for 50+ years! I can’t wait for my next event, and hope to participate in at least a few more before the summer is over.

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported local arts at the Gunpowder River Artfest, and to Boordy Vineyards for being gracious hosts. I’ll be treasuring my souvenir t-shirt for a long time, and will likely be cheesing just as big as I am in that photo above whenever I wear it!

Follow Me to the Farmers Market

I’m so excited to tell you all about the newest place that I’ll be selling my jewelry! This season, on various dates between May and November, I’ll be a guest vendor at the Howard County Farmer’s Market here in Maryland! It’ll be a totally new venue for me. I’m used to selling online with occasional in-person sales at parties and special events, but this will put my jewelry right into people’s hands, ready to try on and take home the same day. Can you tell how excited I am!?

My first market day will be this coming Friday, May 24th, from 2:00-6:00pm at Howard County General Hospital. If you’re in the area, pop by and pay me a visit. I’d love to see you there!

For full details on the 2013 Howard County Farmers Markets, visit this page. I’ll be selling on different dates all through the season, so be sure to follow along on Facebook and Twitter to know when I’ll be there! (Note: the dates listed under J’Adorn Designs on the farmers market webpage is not complete. I am working to correct this!) Oh, and keep an eye on my Instagram to see what beautiful, colorful things I stumble upon at the market.

I hope to see you there!

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

The long wait is over… the Spring/Summer 2013 has landed in my shop! I’ll be rolling out a lot more pieces in the upcoming days, but I am so thrilled to finally show you all what I’ve been laboring over for all these months. If you haven’t seen it yet, hop on over to my shop and check it out!

With the launch of this new collection come a few other changes to J’Adorn Designs. First (and perhaps most apparent) is that some of my prices have gone up.  There are a number of reasons for this change.

First, it will allow me to make higher quality products by using higher quality materials. The majority of my pieces will now use silver- and gold-plated elements or sterling silver rather than base metal. I’ll be stringing beads on strong silk thread designed specifically for jewelry. Better quality means that each piece you purchase from J’Adorn Designs will last you a long time and be wearable for many seasons. This also means that my jewelry will be more hypo-allergenic and comfortable to wear. Many of you have asked about hypo-allergenic options, so I am happy to be able to offer it regularly now!

Pricing my jewelry closer to “industry standard” going forward will also make J’Adorn Designs much more sustainable. This means that I’ll be able to keep doing what I love – making the jewelry that you love! – for years to come. Creating jewelry and making the world more beautiful in doing so is something that I am so passionate about, and I want to continue pursuing this passion for a long, long time!

Lastly, I will now be able to provide you all with better customer service. From here on out, any piece of jewelry you purchase comes with a guarantee that it will last you in a durable way. If your piece breaks within six months of purchase, just send it back along with your receipt and I’ll replace or repair it for free. I’ll even cover the cost of shipping because that’s how much I believe in my product, and how much I value my clients.

I’ll be offering additional services with the advent of this new season, too, so keep checking back for announcements.

————————————-

Since opening my shop one year ago, J’Adorn Designs has been a true labor of love and a joy for me to operate. I am so thankful for each one of you who has supported this business and helped it grow to the place where it is today. I am so excited to see what will happen in the next year, and to continue to grow, expand, and improve. (As always, comments and suggestions in this area are welcome!)

Welcome to a new season of jewelry, and a new season of J’Adorn Designs, friends!

Pretty Little Things: Rifle Paper Co.

Are you guys familiar with Rifle Paper Co.? I was introduced to them a year or two ago when I first dove into the design blogosphere and have been hooked ever since!  I’ve been gawking over their products in paper boutiques all throughout Pinterest for a long time now, but only recently started buying a few pieces to call my own.

The print at the top of this post is actually a Valentine’s Day card that I snagged at a local boutique on clearance after the holiday. I’m working on a gallery wall for the dining room of our apartment and thought that the pretty floral “Je t’aime” print would be a great accent piece. I also found the pad of paper above at the same boutique. It’s magnetic so I can just pop it on the fridge and scrawl notes on it as I think of them. Isn’t it cute?

I was in Target this past weekend picking up gifts for a dear friend’s bridal shower and was pleasantly surprised to spot this set of journals from Rifle in their “gifts to go” section by the gift wrap! I must have been quite the sight for the other Sunday morning customers because I was just casually browsing, then my eyes got really big, I may have gasped and/or audibly said “OMG” and then grabbed a set for myself like a kid fighting for the last cupcake at the table. Except there were no other “kids” grabbing at these, except in my imagination, where everyone else knew what a gem I’d just found and were clamoring to beat me to them all. Scary things play out in my mind, you guys. But I digress…

Just beautiful. For me, it’s all about the details. Simple, chic packaging with great typography. Vibrant colors and lush, painted florals. I couldn’t wait to get these babies home.

I still haven’t decided what I’m going to use these notebooks for. I’m an obsessive crazy avid list-maker, though, so I know that stray paper products floating around my home will never go to waste. Any suggestions?

I hope your week is off to a good start, friends, and if you’re on the East Coast, enjoy this warm weather! I couldn’t be happier that spring has finally arrived.
